Vamonos… Andiamo… The Treble? in Berlin!!

2254277_w2

We didn’t get “El Clasico” final in the UEFA Champions League, but we got two Classic teams in the final; Juventus – Barcelona. La Vecchia Signora, Juventus FC is back in a Champions League (CL) final after 12 years, hoping to win their third CL title, for many a difficult task taking into consideration that they are about to face probably the best team at this moment, FC Barcelona.

Barcelona,a team that went from creating doubts at the beginning of  the season to now create magic, consider by almost everyone the favorites to lift their fifth Champions League title. What is not in doubt, is that they have the most lethal trident at this moments, Messi, Suarez, and Neymar, the “MSN”. The team is in an incredible form  despite the fact that is the end of the season and when most teams are feeling the toughness of all competitions. Barcelona already won two important titles, La Liga and La Copa Del Rey, a boost of confident and definitely an additional motivation to  win the CL and the desire and difficult “Treble”. – (Treble is used in association football to refer to a team winning three trophies in a single season.- via Wikipedia)

2254371_w2

What were the odd that both finalist would be in position to win the Treble?… Juventus also won their local league; Seria A, as well as Coppa Italia which means that they also have the additional motivation to chase the Treble.

Although we can mark some specific differences between both teams, for many, Italian Football (Calcio) has lost a bit of competitiveness which means Juventus reaching the CL final is a slightly bigger accomplishment, despite dominating their league for the past few years they haven’t been able to reach this same stage in previous years, and many Italian teams have struggle in CL waters. Although we can not measure them by those results because we would have to ask what happened with the English Premiere League?, for many maybe the best European league and the most entertaining, but again non Premiere League team reached the semifinals, so everything is up for debate.

2254367_w2

What is not for debate is Barcelona’s great form, not only physically but mentally, La Liga was a tough fight during some months and at the end Real Madrid couldn’t keep the pace in the competition, but despite the tiredness that almost all teams face toward the end of the season, they seem to be in better form than the rest, and it doesn’t hurt to have the best version of Messi, the one that can create magic in the field wowing everyone that watch him make the impossible, possible.

2254328_w2

Yes two tales but one goal, wining La Orejona, it’s all set up for June 6th, when the best attack will face the classic and most expert defense. The italian defense style is known as a padlock. The question is, if Barcelona will be able to open that padlock, on the other hand it is a 90 minutes match and in football sometimes everything and anything can happen, which  makes it more exciting!!

Let’s hope for an entertaining and fun final, with a  bit of emotion and drama why not!

Who do you think will win the Champions League, Barcelona or Juventus,?… Let me know in the comments or on twitter @MonikJHerrera.

Most probably I’ll be kind of live tweeting on Saturday, twitter is fun during games, if you are on it feel free to say hi!

On another note; It is incredible and a bit nostalgic that this match is going to be the last one in a European League for this two Football Legends, Xavi Hernandez and Andrea Pirlo. A win for New York though, apparently Pirlo has already signed with the NYCFC and Xavi is heading to Qatar after the final.

Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoy the match and may your favorite team win!

Saturday’s Flashback Soccer!… Congrats to the LA Galaxy! MLS Champions!

B4SfLTSIcAAkgoI

Congratulations to the LA Galaxy for their fifth MLS Cup title!!

December is not only the last month of the year but also the month of the Major League Soccer final. This year the LA Galaxy won a very emotional title after Robbie Keane scored the game-wining goal, their fifth in their history, becoming the first and only team to accomplished that impressive milestone, #FirtstoFive was the trending hashtag among their fans. The victory was their third title in four years a very difficult and special achievement, only done before by D.C United, therefore Congratulations for an incredible and fun season for the team and the fans!!

Emotional was indeed taking into consideration that Landon Donovan announced his retirement long ago and all his fans were counting down the days until his last game, and he couldn’t ask for a better send off, wining his seventh and last championship,  retiring as the top player in USA soccer history, he is by far the best player this nation has produced for many reasons, including, accomplishments, character and relevance that he has brought to the sport called soccer,  even some controversial moments will remain as part of his legacy!

donovan-white-out

A legacy that is mostly positive and has earned him the title and prestige of being called the best US soccer player, a true legend of the sport in this country, and a favorite for all LA Galaxy fans, and the club where he played most of his career.

The LA Galaxy made it to the final by defeating a good Seattle Sounder team to win the western conference, as one of the most accomplished teams in MLS, with ninth MLS Cup finals, a league record, the expectations for the LA Galaxy are always high, whether fans outside Los Angeles like it or not.

lat-sp-landon-donovan-2-20141207

On the other side NE Revolution had a tough semifinal against the NY red bulls and  Thierry Henry one of the most accomplish player in MLS history who later announced his retirement from all US soccer, his last game in US soil was intense and entertaining, at the end NE Revolution won the Easter conference title and left the NY Red Bulls and Thierry Henry with a feeling that they gave it all during a second leg match that was  intense and with good quality.

The semifinal might have been tough but they won it, a contrast with their MLS Cup final, the fifth time they reached the final and once again for the fifth time they couldn’t win, that must have been hurtful and difficult to digest, but the good news for them is that football doesn’t give you too much time to grief or feel sorry about, as soon as you finish one season the work for the next one starts.

jones_cup

Next season is just a few months away and it would be interesting. A new season without Landon Donovan nor Thierry Henry and with two new teams,  Orlando City Soccer Club and New York City FC, both have added to their brand new rosters some well-known and accomplished, a bit older but still elite players like David Villa, Frank Lampard and Kaka, they might not be in their prime time anymore, but they might still have some class to show and contribute to the league, only time will tell.

Compelling times for MLS and I am happy to get more involved with this upcoming new season!  The good news for all New Yorkers, now, instead of one they get two teams and maybe a rivalry?… what is for sure is that they get more football. The Red Bulls Arena is a nice and beautiful stadium and now  you can add to your NYC football places the Yankee Stadium, that’s a lot of history that now will include a bit of football or let’s say soccer in their legacy!

10701948_338160323024097_1929840432600756729_n

Thanks for reading and stopping by, let me know what do you think, who will be the next Donovan? Or no one can replace him as a symbol of U.S soccer? What about the new signed players like Villa, Lampard, etc are they too old to play in MLS,  it will help or make it worst??

Ok enough questions… Just let me know your though if you want you can do it in the comments or to my twitter @MonikJHerrera

Ballon d’Or!… The award season is ON… prepare the campaigns?…

1804805_full-lnd

We are at the end of the year, the award season is approaching. FIFA just announced their nominations for the prestigious, controversial  at times and very famous Ballon d’Or award.

We all thought this year everything was going to go smoothly with the nominees, well not so fast, things just got a lot interesting to put it in a way and a lot more controversial-ish.

The Nominees for the Best Player of the year are;

B3ziHxfCIAEE5D6

As of a few weeks ago, no one would have doubted that Cristiano Ronaldo was the favorite to win his second Ballon d’or, players and media were talking about his incredible year,  that despite his awful World Cup, he won titles with Real Madrid and broke some records in the process.

Everyone has talked about it, but some opinions have generated more headlines than others;

First Xabi Alonso and his comments about Manuel Neuer and later the reports of his apology for any offense that Ronaldo might have taken over his comments.

Most recently Michel Platini, president of the UEFA, who said that the winner should be “a world champion” and not Ronaldo. Words that not only stir the pot but also generated a response from Real Madrid, the team issued a statement in which they outline his impartiality and reminded him that “the Ballon d’Or  is an individual rather than collective prize.”  – Award drama…

benedict-cumberbatch0826

Now everyone is talking, from ex- players like Thomas Muller, Lotthar Matthaus to current players like Buffon, Pique, Ramos and the list goes on and on and the opinions varies; who deserve it?, if the World Cup should matter more than club achievements, goals records vs season performances, even their marketing powers or sponsorship influences are part of the conversation.

We haven’t mention Messi, who broke two historic records in less than two weeks and suddenly he is back in the race, he was a world cup finalist with Argentina, but aside from that his year hasn’t been that impressive, at least not for some of the media and football fans, and at times he wasn’t even consider as a possible winner, now he is in the race talk, although the voting process was closed before he broke the records, this just has added more to the drama!

B3ziHuiCUAA2ZlP

Coach of the Year is another big award that have also created controversy in the past, this year at least most agree with the final three nominees. All have made enough the past year and deserve the award but only one will get it, who?… is yet to be seen, for many the race is between Diego Simeone and Carlo Ancelotti.

B3ziH4CCQAAnUzi

The Puska award should be a fun one, James goal was incredible but Van Persie’s was very impressive too, let’s not forget all the fun we had with the memes and it also created a new verb; Vanpersing!!

What is for sure is that we will have to wait to see how the Ballon d’Or drama will unfold, people will keep talking, speculating and most will keep campaigning for their players, for some this should be avoided but that also has become part of the award itself.

The voting process for the 2014 Ballon d’Or ended on Nov. 21st, 2014, with coaches and captains from all FIFA member associations, as well as some media representatives, choosing their three favorites.

Thanks for reading and stopping by!!! Who do you think should win the Ballon d’Or for player of the year?… Which goal was the best one?…. Feel free to share your opinion, you can leave a comment here or on  my twitter @MonikJHerrera.

I leave you with a few but fun vanpersing pictures.

Congratulations Mate!! … Cars, races and drama… Its called Fourmula One!!

1416762494_285425_1416762645_noticia_grande

Congratulations mate, Lewis Hamilton the 2014 Formula One World Champion!!

I have been following the Formula One from some year now, it was like I keep an eye on it, I knew what was happening but I wasn’t as involved as I’ve been this  past season, but every year my interest grow until I finally gave up, now I have both eyes on it and I couldn’t be happier!

For many people racing could be boring, cars going around and around, but I find it very interesting, like other sports disciplines it’s also about skills, strategies and in this case engines, and of course all the drama that sometimes and more than what people think surround the drivers, teams or the Formula One itself, it happens every year, which I find fascinating!

B2BE7I2CQAIhTSP

B2-vItKIQAAM5fh

The season is over, at the end it was a great one , it stared with the realization that Mercedes- Benz’s cars were as the media  called them superior comparing to the rest of the cars, so everyone thought it was going to be a predictable season and that they probably would win all races, which they almost did, with the exception of three that were won by red Bull drivers, the rest were for Mercedes’ drivers overall they ended up wining the F1 Constructors’ Championship …

Contrary to everyone’s’ believes  it turned out to be very entertaining, mostly  thanks to the rivalry between both Mercedes’ drivers, Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg it was so intense at times, especially because of their history, friends for a long time until the fight for the title got in between of their friendship. For many their relationship will never be the same again…

B3ImcOjIMAAML0Z

B3IRV27CAAA1KZt

Hamilton got to Abu Dhabi in a better position he needed to win or finish second to become the champion, Rosberg had it a bit more complicated he needed to win and then wait for Lewis to finish third or lower.  All this was the perfect set up to define the championship in the last race, the last battle, it was supposed to be like the battle of the two towers… -Yes another LOTR reference.. I’m obsess with them!!-…

All started very promising, when Hamilton passed Rosberg right at the beginning of the race and then we all listened to  Rosberg talking to his tea through their radio that his car was having electric problems, and from that moment the battle of the two towers was over, donzo…Well, we all know what happened later, as Hamilton said it, he had the best day of his life!!

B3Io2ZFCIAAeC-N

Eventhough, Rosberg was not able to challenge Hamilton in that last race Felipe Massa with Williams put up a good fight, at the end it was fun to watch… so now it time to wait and see all the moves between drivers, cars and teams and see how they will get ready for the 2015 season!!

Thanks for reading I am happy to include formula One in my sport world, feel free to share with me, if you like races and drivers? what are your expectation for next season or what did you think about this past season?… or anything you want to share… You can leave a comment in the comment area or on my twitter @MonikJHerrera!

Let’s play… World Cup Predictions!!

Hello, what’s up?

Brazil-Eye

I am watching you Brazil!! It’s Prediction time 😉

I did this last World Cup and had a mix result, so let’s try this again, I don’t have the skills of Paul the octopus, all my respect for him and may he rest in peace, he was the star of last World Cup predictions, he did it right!

So here we go, I Know most of the groups have already played their first matches, so we  can say that I have recent  information, but I will be honest with you, the latest result have nothing to do with these predictions, even with the surprises that we have witnessed I am sticking to my original pick,  I will go with my original instincts. I’m scare because some of them are in trouble right now but well I will take the risk… Living the risky life!! 😉 hehe

Same as last World Cup, are based on what I know about the teams, what I expect or consider they are capable to do. So let do this…

Let’s Start

My Predictions in blue!! This time I doing it in detail, I’m  picking two countries, the one I think will qualify at the top and the one in second place.  By the way these are not the Countries I am  supporting, these are the ones I predict will get out of their groups.

Group A Prediction Group B prediction Group C pred Group D pred Group E pred Group F pred Group G pred Group H pred

Well there you have it, let’s see how well I will do this time,  last World Cup my results were a 50/50 kind of thing,  thank God that I don’t do this as a living…  Once the group stage is over, then it’s head to head predictions yeyyy!!

Thanks for reading, feel free to share your picks if you have, or what country you are supporting if is not your own.

Maybe later I’ll share the ones I am rooting for… Those ones I pick them with the heart! ♥ aw

Besitos.

Pictures from google and FIFA.com (these one I cropped them  and edited on Photoshop, I like to play with Photoshop some times… As you can see is not my forte ;0

Game on! It’s the World Cup, time to shine!!

Hello!

2014-World-Cup-Desktop-Wallpaper-background1

The wait it’s over, no more counting days or hours, it was kick-off time in Brazil yesterday, Thursday June 12th. The emotions, the passion the excitement was over the top, four years in the making, waiting and finally the day arrived, we couldn’t be more happy!

During the next month the World’s eyes will be on Brazil, and the 32 countries that will compete, put all their effort and passion to achieve the most prestigious title, being the World Champion, all of them dream to lift the Cup, the beautiful trophy. But not all of them have the capabilities or the competitive level to lift it, but for the ones that have chances this is their ultimate dream, unfortunately or fortunately only one can be the Champion!

FIFA-World-Cup-2014-world-cup-wallpaper1

It’s official, The World Cup 2014 party begun with a simple and nice opening ceremony, for some people maybe too simple, they were expecting a bit more from Brazil a country well-known for their spectacular carnivals, but for some others it was just the perfect way to give the spotlight to the real show; The matches and the teams!

wcoc5_1402598863849_6209465_ver1_0_640_480

Iphone 069

After all JLo did make it to Brazil, FIFA had already announced that she was not going to be part of the show, but at the end she made it and perform the official World Cup song along with Brazilian singer Claudia Leitte, and Pitbull. By the way I’m not a big fan of the song and for some reason every time they perform it sound out of sync… Bad lip-sync?…

After the opening ceremony it was time for what we have been waiting for so long, the real kick-off, the home team in an opening match in a stadium that was all yellow and green the colors of Brazil national team.

Brazil’s first opponent was Croatia at the all-new Itaquerao stadium, Brazilians wanted to see some “Jogo bonito” or “beautiful game” the way the world has recognized their national team style of play the game in the past.

No much of that “Jogo bonito” yesterday, it was more an ok Jogo… Brazil left a lot of doubt in their World Cup debut, they are at home, and are expected to be a real contender to win their six WC Title, but they were nervous, a bit sloppy on defense and they had a surprising opponent, I think nobody thought that Croatia was going to complicate Brazil the way they did, which was a good surprise, always nice to watch a team playing without fear and trying to get the best result with their resources.

Brazil was down on the board early, at the 11th minute Marcelo scored the first WC goal but not for Brazil, but for Croatia, was an own goal, tough way for Marcelo and Brazil to start the tournament in front of their fans. It was not Brazil best match but they were very effective, with Neymar scoring the goal that tied the game, bringing back the calm to all Brazilians hearts.

10440841_552263761551312_1121844406739469051_n

It was his way to respond to the pressure that everyone is talking about, he is supposed to be the big start of Brazil national team, yeap a lot to handle for a 22 years old man, well I guess he is doing good, scored two goals, was very involve in the match and showied that he can handle the pressure at least for now…

Of course the big controversy was the referee awarding a penalty to Brazil that never existed, but well that was an awful starting from the referee, made two bad calls that impacted the game, but the one everyone is talking the most is the penalty kick,  Neymar once again scored for Brazil, it was his second goal.

10450853_10152515025452640_4203504337725364021_n

Brazil didn’t need the help from the referee and that has created a lot of doubts about the referees’ performance for future matches, let’s hope this was a one time kind of thing from their side. It’s a WC and they are humans and probably we will see more mistakes but as long as they don’t impact the result of the games or the outcome everything will be alright.

I think the good news today was Croatia, because they gave Brazil a good fight and as I said it before they complicated them more than once. Good for them and not so good for the rest of their group Mexico and Cameroon, now they know that Croatia has potential to get out of the group stages and give a fight to advance to the next stage. We will see…

croatia-world-cup-poster-espn-600x900

Anyway it’s so fricking nice to talk about the World Cup, to dive into the whole experience. Today it’s Match day 2 action, we have three matches, Mexico – Cameroon (Group A). Later Group B will make their  tournament debut, first Spain – Netherlands a rematch of the 2010 World Cup final,  and then Chile – Australia. Busy day 😉

Which team do you think will win the World Cup?? or Which team are your supporting?  Let me know in the comments, if you want,  I have some countries in mind as my favorites since my country is not part of the 32 nations…  I will share my predictions with you next post, I did it last WC and I did kind of ok hehe  50/50 on the group stage, so let’s se how I will do this time,  this is fun!!!

Thank you for reading, feel free to share your thoughts, comments, question or whatever you want, this is the time to enjoy this beautiful event and the beautiful game!

Besitos!

P.S; I like to tweet, post pictures before, during and after the matches, if you want to join the conversation this is my twitter @MonicaJHerrera.

Brazil or not Brazil!

Hello there!

world-cup-2014-600x337

It’s all about to be or not to be, in this case Brazil or not Brazil, the second leg of the play-off  are taking place throughout the day, for many countries this is it. Today is their last chance to get a ticket to the most amazing Football tournament, the World Cup 2014.

You can add Ghana and Algeria in the Brazil qualified teams roster, 28 so far, they won their tickets early today.

436-HQOSB_AuSt_55

France is 2-0 at this moment vs Ukraine, Les Bleus need to win this match, they lost they first leg match 0-2 vs Ukraine which left them out of Brazil,  Aggregate result is 2-2, all tie, France is alive and still with plenty of time, they need to win to qualify…

331003_heroa

Sweden is 2-1 vs Portugal right now, this is an interesting game you have Cristiano Ronaldo in Portugal as their top player and you have Zlatan Ibrahimovic in the Sweden side, both player competing for the Ballon d’Or, aspiring to be recognized  as the best player of the world. One of them will make it to Brazil and unfortunately the other will have to watch it on TV… The result from the first leg match was Portugal 1-0 Sweden, let’s see how this one will unfold, dramaaa… As of now Portugal is in Brazil, but again there is still plenty of time,  Sweden needs to win this game.

The rest of the European play-off Croatia is 2 – 0 Iceland (Aggregate 2-0) and  Romania is 1-1 Greece (Aggregate 2-4)

Mexico and Uruguay will play tomorrow, El Tri have a very early morning game at least in my local time, 1:00 am haha… Both have a good advantage, both won their first leg game with a good margin.  Uruguay won 5-0 vs Jordan and Mexico 5-1 vs New Zeeland.

This is it, today we will know all teams that will be in Brazil 2014!

P.S: I’m back! I was a bit missing in action… you know what they say, when it rains it pours… and I have learned to dance under the rain, but I just needed to get over with this pouring thing lol. I’m a great hitter, thanks God cause I’ve been getting some awful curveballs…

Brazil 2014 in the making!

Hello y’all!!

article-2204405-150DB5D3000005DC-270_634x626

Brazil is shaping up!!

That is what I have to say today, and I am so happy  like a kid in a candy or an ice cream store lol…

Yeah today is World Cup Qualifying day, most countries will know or already know if they will pack their bags to Brazil or If they will have to make another stop in between and try it again in a play-off scenario and for some others this would be a “maybe for the next WC” I am so sorry for this last ones… I feel your pain!

At this moment 6:48 pm in New York City 18 counties have a beautiful and precious direct ticket to Brazil!!

So far here are the ones that already qualified;

Teams WC

Some Notes;

  • Spain sealed their ticket today, they will try to keep the Cup for another four years, they are the current Champions, we will see if they can repeat the greatest achievement in football!
  • England also got their ticket early today, with a bit of suspense before the game, but everyone expected them to win and qualify for Brazil!
  • The eight top seeds in the next World Cup will be base on the latest FIFA rankings, so far for sure; Brazil, Spain, Germany, Argentina, Belgium and Switzerland, the last two seed spots are still yet to be determinate, we will have to wait until the results for the pending games to be play in our side of the pond!

But don’t get confuse we still have some drama…. Things are pretty much decided in Europe, some teams will have to go to a play-off draw and try to get a ticket there. :/

The European play-off;

  •  Croatia, Portugal, Greece, Ukraine, France, Sweden, Romania, Iceland.

We have to wait to see who else from the Americas or other continents will have to go to play-off.

Mexico-101413Training-Feature-769x385

In our side of the continent, the drama is for Mexico who will find out today after all if they will have a chance to keep the hopes up for Brazil or If they will say good-bye, they have options, after wining their last game in El Azteca against Panama,  as of now they have a ticket to the play-off but we will have to wait.

The team is confident, they are playing vs Costa Rica, already qualified, Panama is still with options, it will be difficult for them but things are a bit open so we will have to wait, and yes maybe some nails biting  and some hair ripping in the process… not me, but if your country is still with options you might not be able to avoid the biting nails and hair thing hehe… don’t worried I can give you some tips to recover, I know about that ;/

Anyways, lets’ enjoy this journey again, this it’s almost done and we are going to be ready for Brazil 2014!!!!

Fifa wc

Thanks for reading, I hope your team or country is moving on, if not, well, do what I do, pick a bunch of other countries and try your prediction skills lol… The good news is that we love this game!! Football or soccer whatever way you called it!

Besitos!

Let’s Get It Started…

Hola!!

Monica Iphone 017

Let’s Get It Started, in here…

And the base keep runnin’ runnin’, and runnin’ runnin’, and runnin’ runnin’, and runnin’ runnin’, and…

So I will set free my inner sport soul… the brain side that speaks only Sports! 😉

As you can read in my About page, I like almost all type of Sports, but I am really into Football or Soccer as is called in the US, I still can not get use to that name, so probably I will keep calling it  Football more than once… I have never played it, I suck at it, I am bad, like painful bad hahaha I tried it once just for fun but ohhh boy I have zero feet coordination, but the weirdest thing is that I have a very good coordination when it comes to dancing 😉

dancing

I rock the dance floor… and apparently I am very into peace and love lol!!

The World Cup is the biggest event in Football around the World and my goal! I am working for that and then I will wait for the miracle to happen! lol… It was during the World Cup in 1990 that I got a full understanding and knowledge of the game, and there is when my real admiration and love for it went to another level, more educated and more passionate too…

I have to confess,  I was getting into full adolescent you know the time when you start to see boys and start to pay more attention if they are cute or not, so yes I started to follow some players base in a purely womanly and superficial reason, they were hot back them and they are hot now!!… I know if you are guy you’re probably saying… arggggg… well don’t judge me, in my defense I was getting into full puberty and yes I am just a girl with eyes, brown eyes and what could I do, they are athletes and they have perfect bodies, but that was just an eye catcher the rest of it is an admiration for the sport and for the abilities of those handsome players. A pure love for the game, the strategies, the different ways to see it and to approach a match!! I just love it all 🙂

FIFA Balon D’Or, Dream XI of 2012

So expect a lot of soccer posts. I’ve been following the Spanish La Liga for many years, I think is one of the best leagues around the globe, the Champions League is another pleasure that I like to talk about and from a couple of years ago I started to sneak peek at some other leagues too… Then I’ll try to share a bit about other sports, Basketball, which I played and now The knicks have brought me back to the NBA Nation. I love Tennis,  I have never played it, but it is in my bucket list, one day I will learn at least how to hit the ball and send it above the net hehe…

Exhibition: Sampras vs Agassi at the Madison Square Garden…. way way from up top!

There you have it, I know… I know, I am in the USA and of course here American Football is the deal, give me sometime, I’ve been learning and I am getting better, so I might include some things about it, let’s see if I can make some progress in that area…  feel free to teach me something!!

I have a tendency to write a lot, as you can see,  I have writing incontinence most of the time, but I am working on it ;S… I hope I won’t make you fall asleep and if I do, well this should be cheaper than an sleeping pill. lol

Thank for reading, I would love to hear about you and which sport you like, feel free we can debate or agree with this crazy but fun world! Don’t be shy!!

Meanwhile I leave you with today’s post theme song!!
